About my art

cheryl irwinMy work is done on a composite stone that I make up myself (grout, cement and sand) and am able to carve into before it hardens. I then use watercolours that soak into the grain of the stone and I coat the work in a UV filter acrylic laminate (rated for outdoor use). I have corresponded with Windsor Newton regarding the light fastness of the watercolours under the laminate and they have responded favourably.

My “Sacred Language” series feels like a language to me, the patterns of colour and form that appear speak to me through my senses, I feel the colours and shapes of the painting rather than try to read it analytically with my logical mind.

My series “Translations” uses some representational elements or symbols. I am engaging my logical mind to tell a story about human connections, “translating” my joy.

The whole  process is extremely enjoyable for me, it is a “working” meditation, it relaxes me and teaches me. I can feel my own energy radiating out of my finished work back to me.

I am able to complete the circle.

About Me

Born: August 11, 1960 U.S.A
Lives: Methven, New Zealand

Since I was a child I have loved visual arts - drawing, painting and doing craft work. (oh, the remembered joy of a new box of crayons. . .). However, at university I did a degree in science, believing in the more useful practicality of biology and chemistry.

During the time our children (3 sons) were small I ran “Fairfield Arts” a stained glass business, primarily concerned with the production of guardian angels which I sold in gift shops throughout New Zealand.

When our youngest son turned 15, I thought it was time to return to my first love and I began a course of formal art studies through Aoraki Polytechnic (Ashburton campus). I soon discovered the link between art and my spiritual journey and although I was doing a part-time course, I began to practice art full-time.  I enjoyed it so much that soon I was deriving my sense of occupation from art and with that came the desire to share it.

One has to be oneself. That’s my basic message. The moment you accept yourself as you are, all burdens, all mountainous burdens, simply disappear. Then life is sheer joy, a festival of lights ~ Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh
